Music and money. At first glance, it seems like an adversarial relationship along the lines of the Hatfields and the McCoys, the proverbial cats and dogs, Republicans and Democrats (oops!). Or perhaps common ground is shared in a mutually beneficial relationship. Our discussion will touch on the work of creative artists in a society where artistic worth is overwhelmingly defined by monetary value. Is good music necessarily that which generates the most revenue? Is the gig economy that currently is affecting the lives of so many a new phenomenon and is it unique to North America? We will explore this complex relationship drawing on the thoughts of Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann, political philosopher/economist Karl Marx, and others. Let’s talk about it.
