The Beatitudes (Mt. 5) in Matthew’s gospel represent the new covenant between God and humanity, wherein the believing community is called to be a sign of that covenant. In both the Beatitudes and the Final Judgment (Mt. 25), members of believing communities recognize that their call is not primarily to be good people, but specifically good people whose actions restructure the character of socio-political relationships. Thus, good people act in a transformative way in the unfolding of human history.

Ramon Duran has been a professional organizer with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) for the past 24 years. He has organized in the Rio Grande Valley, Del Rio/Eagle Pass, Lubbock, and the communities of the I-35 Corridor between San Antonio and Austin. Since November 2018, Duran has been an organizer for the Interfaith/Community Action Network (I/CAN) in San Antonio. Duran, originally from El Paso, Texas, studied for two years at the University of Chicago in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.
